Happy New Year!

As you can imagine, the past few months have been incredibly busy!  October - December is always a busy tourism season.  Some of the events we had include: Alabama Tale Tellin' Festival, Integrity Worldwide 5K, Haunted History Tours, Kenan's Mill Festival, West Dallas Antique Tractor Show, Selma's Annual Christmas Parade, Art Jam at the Walton Theatre, and countless others that attract visitors from outside Dallas County.

Tourism has also been working on several projects such as the Audio Tours and the Tourism Awards.  The Audio Tour project is close to completion.  Signs for all 75 sites (yes, 75!) have been ordered and should arrive within the next few weeks.  After they arrive, I will be working with the City of Selma to install signs in front of each site. We will also schedule an unveiling date soon, so be on the lookout for that information!

We decided to create the first ever Tourism Awards for the Event of the Year and Attraction of the Year in an effort to recognize the hard work of those that contribute to Selma and Dallas County's tourism industry.  The community is invited to vote on the winners by clicking here and submitting nominations. Over 25 attractions and over 40 events have already been nominated for these awards! Winners will be announced at the Centre for Commerce Annual meeting on January 22, 2015.

As one of our New Year's resolutions, we will be making every effort to regularly post on this blog (hopefully the first Monday of every month). Please subscribe and you can receive an email each time we post something new.

Alabama River Chili Cook-off

The Leadership Selma-Dallas County Class organized its third annual Alabama River Chili Cook-off for March 13.  Each year the event raises money for a specific charity and this year the proceeds were donated to Cahaba Center for Mental Health.  Over a thousand people came for all-you-can-eat chili and a family-friendly event.

Jeffrey's Adventure to the Library

Jeffrey visited the Selma and Dallas County Public Library today and even got a library card! The library hosts events throughout the year in addition to providing books and other reading materials to the public.  Check out their website to learn more about their events: http://www.selmalibrary.org/

Jeffrey's Adventure to the Mayor's Office

Jeffrey had the privilege of meeting Mayor George Evans today at City Hall!  Mayor Evans is in his second term as Mayor of Selma, Alabama and he enjoyed meeting with Jeffrey today.

Mayor Evans is very active in civic and charitable organizations.  One of his charitable events is actually coming up next week - the 4th Annual Mayor's Charity Golf Classic on October 16, 2013.  All proceeds from the tournament benefit special needs children in Selma and Dallas County.  Jeffrey plans on going to the tournament and maybe even playing a little.  Will you be there?

Jeffrey's Adventure to the Centre for Commerce

Jeffrey decided to visit the Centre for Commerce building today to learn more about Selma!  The Centre for Commerce is located at 912 Selma Avenue in the historic Carnegie Library building in downtown Selma.

The Centre for Commerce houses the Selma Economic Development Authority, the Chamber of Commerce, Selma and Dallas County Tourism, and Leadership.  Each entity operates under its own board, yet they all work together to move forward in the creation and implementation of coordinated business development.

Jeffrey loved how beautiful the building is on the inside and outside!  He also loved how helpful the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism directors were in finding other locations for him to explore this month.

We can't wait to see where Jeffrey will make his next appearance!

UPDATE (Oct. 3):

Our receptionist just spotted Jeffrey's signature in the Centre for Commerce guest book!  I guess he signed in before we helped him figure out where to go on his next adventure.
